Thursday, 31 March 2011
The Football Association of Ireland have today (Thursday) confirmed that the Republic of Ireland U16 team will play Belgium in a double international friendly in Turners Cross, Cork and Blarney United on April 12th and April 14th respectively.
John Morling’s Irish U16 A & B side will line out in Turners Cross on Tuesday, April 12 with the ‘A’ selection, kicking-off at 5pm while the ‘B’ selection will take to the field at 7.30pm.
Two days later, O’ Shea Park will play host to the two international fixtures on Thursday, April 14 with the ‘A’ teams lining out at 11am while the ‘B’ selections kick-off at 1.30pm.
Republic of Ireland U16 manager, John Morling said, “I am delighted to bring our U16 team to Cork for these international friendlies. Over the years, I know a number of international teams have come to Cork and enjoyed some fantastic support from the local community. In 2008, the Irish U16 team took on Germany in O’Shea Park and a massive 1,500 people packed the ground which is unheard of for a game at this age level, so I am really looking forward to these games,” he said.
Welcoming the news was Chairman of the Munster FA, Paddy Pollard who said, “This is tremendous news for the Munster football community, particularly in Cork. We are delighted to welcome the two teams to Turners Cross and O’Shea Park for these games and it will give the locality the chance to see some of Ireland’s up and coming stars in action on their doorstep,” he said.
