CITY CHALLENGE CUP
Ballyvolane B 2 Northvilla 1
All the goals and most of the action was packed into the second quarter as Ballyvolane B reached the semi-finals of the Murphy’s Stout City Challenge Cup with a 2-1 win over Mick Leonard’s visitors Northvilla.
Northvilla, the newly crowned 2B champions, had left rivals Ballyvolane well behind them on the league table but Ballyvolane manager Derek Mellerick was the happier after Saturday’s encounter that ended badly for the visitors.
But Northvilla were quite happy in the 37th minute when they took the lead. The goal owes much to the persistence of midfielder Ray Foley who troubled the home defence in the box. The ball eventually squirted loose and Keith Fitzgerald knocked it in.
The equaliser came three minutes later, following a long free by Ger O'Riordan. It was inadvertently headed back across his own goal by a Northvilla player and raiding full back Conor Madden hit a close range volley past the keeper.
Adrian McDonnell was probably Ballyvolane's best player in the first half and he was twice involved when they took the lead in the 44th minute. His neat ball sent Stephen O'Keeffe free on the right and McDonnell was on hand to take the return and cross towards the near post where Nugent rose to head the winner.
Ballyvolane defended well in the second half and indeed, thanks to their solid defence and the hard work of Nugent in the middle, they comfortably repelled the Northvilla attacks and indeed had probably as many themselves.
Any hopes Northvilla had of equalising vanished in the 79th minute when they had two players sent off in the one incident. It was an isolated incident as the exchanges up to that had admittedly hard but generally fair.
