AOH CUP
Castleview 2 Lakewood Athletic 1
Martin Meehan headed the extra time winner as Castleview qualified for the fourth round of the Murphy’s Stout AOH Cup and a date with Passage by beating visitors Lakewood Athletic 2-1 in Saturday’s replay at O'Sullivan Park.
It was a game that the View should have wrapped up in the first half. But they could manage just the one goal, mainly because of defiant performances by Lakewood’s Damien Lordan and keeper Robert Spillane.
Lakewood improved in the second half and an equaliser was on the cards and it came in the closing stages. But Lakewood, whose manger Mick Carey reckons they have enough on their plate with the league and St Michael's Cup, were undone seconds into extra time when Meehan looped a close range header over Spillane after a Garvey cross.
Garvey was also the supplier when the ‘View took a deserved lead midway through the opening half. His right wing corner kick was headed on by Tony Hackett and Shane Brady was on the spot to volley home.
Spillane didn't have a hope with that one and it looked as if he would be beaten again six minutes before the break. Garvey was again the supplier and this time Jamie Bolger got in a volley but Spillane reacted magnificently to touch it over the bar.
Garvey was quite a handful for Lakewood in the first half and, in between the goals, his 28th minute cross was headed on, again by Hackett, but this time an overhead effort by Tommy Collins just cleared the bar.
Damien Lordan took a close range Castleview effort off the line before improving Lakewood equalised in the 73rd minute. Then a terrific long range strike by Michael Greene crashed back off the bar and Shane O'Sullivan reacted sharply to crack in the rebound.
Castleview had the better chances from there until the end but had to wait until 46 seconds into extra time for Meehan’s winner. Lakewood had the better of the second period. Brendan O'Leary put a header just over and then only a terrific penalty box tackle by Brian Murphy denied Green a shooting chance after a pass by sub Dessie Murphy.
