AOH CUP
Village Utd B  0 Togher Rovers B 1

Richard “Minty” Fitzgerald used his dead ball skills to deadly effect as Togher Rovers left it late to score the only goal of their second round game against Village Utd.

This AOH Cup battle of the B teams was decided with just seconds to go when a corner by the former schoolboy international took a deflection off a Village defender and ended up in the back of the net.

Both these third division teams played some decent football over the ninety minutes but the honours go to the respective defences who kept scoring chances to a minimum. Village had a few in the first half but there were even fewer in the second half.

There was a cautious start to the Silverheights encounter and ten minutes had elapsed before there was a shot of note. Then Village’s Brian Sheridan let fly but his long range shot was well saved – two efforts needed -  by Togher keeper John Punch.

In the next minute Village, with John McNamara prominent, had a spell of sustained pressure but that ended with an Alan Daly flick that went narrowly wide. And Daly was a little unlucky six minutes later, when he just failed to get on the end of a ball over the top and Punch timed his advance well and got there first.

Midway through, John McNamara hooked the ball wide after advancing towards the near post and, a few minutes later, Daly just failed to connect with an inviting cross from the right. Daly was unlucky again in the 35th minute to see a decent effort flash just over the bar. Togher’s only noteworthy chance came in the minutes just before the break when Fitzgerald’s free kick sailed over the bar.

Nothing changed for Daly after the break. In the 47th minute, he struck the ball narrowly wide after good work by Sean Kelleher in the middle of the park. And at the other end soon afterwards, Mark Conlon hooked the ball just wide after a Togher counter-attack.

Togher were now getting a bigger share of the chances. In the 50th minute, Aidan O’Sullivan headed narrowly over from a free and then Fitzgerald got away from his marker but lifted his 18 yard effort over.

Village’s Francis McNamara then twice troubled the visitors defence. In the 54th minute, his free kick brought a good save from Punch. Six minutes later, brother John hared down the left and his cross was met by the inrushing Francis but his effort came off a Togher defender and went out for a corner.

Togher’s Ger Byrnes then freed Fitzgerald who, in turn sent Liam Sisk away down the middle for a shot that was blocked down. The ball fell to Fitzgerald and his well hit effort was impressively saved by John Lynch.

And, in the 76th minute, Fitzgerald tested Lynch again and again the keeper did well and “finger tipped” the ball over the bar. But Minty would have the last laugh with that deflected corner.
