AUL 3B:
Village Utd 2 UCC 1
Dean Murray was the hero for Village United who took the runners up spot in Murphy’s Stout AUL 3B when they defeated champions UCC 2-1 in difficult conditions at Silverheights last Saturday.
It was Village who applied the early pressure and, in the 10th minute, Alan Daly produced a good run when he got by his marker. The ball eventually breaking for Dean Murray and his close range shot was palmed away for a corner by UCC goalkeeper Dave O’Brien. James McNamara got a free header from the corner but his effort flashed wide of the target.
Village’s John McNamara produced a fine run to release Paul Kelly on the right but Kelly drilled his 25 yard shot wide. And then John got in a firm header but his effort was cleared off the line by Ronan O’Sullivan.
Village were awarded a penalty by referee Alan Jones in the 53rd minute and Murray slotted it away to make it 1-0 to Village. And Village made it 2-0 six minutes later when Murray fired in his second of the encounter.
UCC fought back and soon reduced the deficit when Ed Quirke forced the ball over the line to bring his side back into it. UCC kept at it and pressed hard for an equaliser but were met by a resilient Village defence where Philip O’Riordan and James McNamara were outstanding.
And it was Village who came closest to scoring in the closing stages. In the 80th minute, Declan Cronin hit a tremendous 35 yard drive and was unlucky to see it come back off the post.
