MUNSTER CUP

Villa United 4 Rockville 1

“It was a great win. Rockville are a good team, but on the day, we deserved it,” said a  delighted Villa selector Pat O'Callaghan, having watched his team advance in the Lucozade Sport Munster Junior Cup with an emphatic 4-1 win over Martin Heffernan’s charges.

“We have a lot of young lads, good forwards, and it came right for us this morning. The first goal is always vital and it was a gem by Paul Murphy. We had to up it again after the equaliser and Kevin Betts at the back post put us back in the driving seat.”

Rockville's Kieran Cogan dives to save.

What did they say to the team at half-time. “Don't take your foot off the pedal. It is a big game, Munster Cup, you have to keep going and, in fairness, the lads, aware of our strong subs on the line, upped it again in the second half and we wrapped it up early on”.

Villa striker Brian Montgomery (9) makes it 4-1 at The Glen.

Man of the match? “Without a doubt, Kevin Betts on the left hand side. He had a fantastic game. Keeper Paddy O’Shea, another great player, kept us in it early on. Keith Shaw in the middle, an ex Rockville man himself, had another great game for us.”

The two opening goals were class efforts. In the 20th minute, Villa midfielder Paul Murphy raided up the right, cut inside and crashed a left -footed drive past Kieran Cogan.

Rockville responded well. Mick McAuliffe controlled a cross by Wayne Hogan, turned and shot past Paddy O’Shea to level.

Just before the break, Willie Harris got in a terrific cross from the right and Kevin Betts arrived on cue at the far post to knock the low ball past the keeper.

The writing was on the wall for Rockville when Villa made it 3-1 six minutes into the second half. Monty broke through the middle and unexpectedly fired in a powerful shot. Cogan dived to parry but Harris was on hand to tap home.

It was all over on the hour. Then midfielder Paul Murphy got his head to a corner and directed the ball towards the back post where Mont, gomery was waiting to turn it in from close range.
