Early Burke Blast Put Glenthorn On The Victory Path

Glenthorn Celtic, winners in 1B clash.

Brooklodge United 0 Glenthorn Celtic 2

Glenthorn Celtic scored early and late to record a deserved 2-0 away win over Brooklodge United at Knockraha last Saturday afternoon. Celtic enjoyed majority possession but found it quite difficult to penetrate a solid Brooklodge rearguard with keeper Frank Walsh in top form.

The winners opened their account in the 4th minute. Midfield player Alan Falvey sent a measured pass on to Thomas Kelleher, who found Paul Burke about 20 yards from the goal. Burke’s forceful shot flew beyond the reach of Brooklodge goalkeeper Walsh and into the back of the net.

Falvey took control in the middle of the park from early on and, in the 10th minute, set up goal-scorer Burke on the right with a neat pass, but Burke’s tempting ball was well cut out by keeper Walsh, who was destined to have a busy day.

Glenthorn were having it all their own way, and Falvey exchanged passes with Thomas Kelleher before unleashing a good strike, which Walsh managed to block with his legs.

There was a rare Brooklodge raid midway through when Cormac O’Keeffe got away, but his 35-yard effort sailed too high.

Brooklodge draws blanks. No goals. No points, No joy.

Minutes later, Glenthorn’s Colin Dorney slipped a nice ball on for Thomas Kelleher, but Brooklodge defender Steve McMahon made a good tackle and conceded a corner. The flag kick reached Falvey just outside the 18-yard box, and he unleashed a ferocious strike that Walsh did well to push onto the upright.

Glenthorn started the second half brightly, and Connie Kent fired wide from the edge of the 18-yard box in the 49th minute. Falvey produced a marvellous run that got him beyond three Brooklodge defenders, but his cross from the right went begging.

Brooklodge keeper Walsh collected a Thomas Kelleher cross intended for Darren Kennefick on the hour mark and soon afterwards denied the same player in a race for Paul Burke’s pass from the left. In the 73rd minute, Burke picked up a Connie Kent pass, but while the shot had the beating of Walsh on this occasion, it flashed inches wide.

Finbarr Murphy is now lead referee observer for the Cork area.

Two minutes later, Glenthorn substitute Graham Kennefick found himself one-on-one with the Brooklodge goalkeeper, and again, it was the keeper who came out on top.

Brooklodge’s substitutes, Fergal Rochford and Alan O’Shea, did well when they came on. On occasions, they made life uncomfortable for the visiting defence by running at it, but the two subs lacked support.

The deserved second Glenthorn goal came from a corner with seconds to go. Sub Graham Kennefick delivered a decent cross to the far post, where Falvey rose highest to head home and put his side in a very strong position in the division.
