Second half goals count for Casement, the new Corinthians victors |
All the goals came in the second half as Casement Celtic took the Murphy’s Stout Corinthians Cup with a 2-1 win over Northvilla at Turner’s Cross on Monday night.
Northvilla, the 2B champions, had the better of the first half chances but fell behind early in the second when Daniels Barnes netted from close range after keeper John O'Sullivan had parried a low angled drive by Kenneth O'Regan.
O'Regan was one of the more best Casement players on the night and he delivered again with five minutes of normal time remaining. Barnes should have wrapped it up off an O'Regan pass but O’Regan himself did the business by heading in the resultant corner by Greg Corrigan.

Northvilla |
Northvilla, who had earlier lost Kevin Goldsmith to injury, were by then down to ten men. In the 74th minute, defender Keith McCarthy picked up his second yellow after a midfield tackle on John Paul Heffernan.
Disappointment also for Northvilla four minutes later. The combative John Kennelly, their man of the match, hit a corner and Patrick O’Connor stabbed it home but referee Damien O'Mahony signalled a free out for pushing.
The big disappointment though for the Northsiders was their failure to find the net in the first half. Stephen O’Connor went close with an angled shot in the 9th minute off a header-on by Keith Fitzgerald.
Fitzgerald himself had the best chance midway through but volleyed wide from close range when a cross came in from the right.
Casement were under pressure again in the 40th minute. Keeper Willie Hyde did well to parry a Fitzgerald shot on the turn. Full back Ian O’Halloran raced in to clear but instead gave the ball to Kenneally. His effort was held by Hyde and then dropped but, by then, the Northvilla attackers had turned their backs.
Kevin Goldsmith had some heading chances for Northvilla and, in the 45th minute, O'Connor drove over after a free broke to him. For all that, Casement came closest to scoring before the break. Three minutes into injury time, Barnes sent Terence Hourigan free and his angled effort was deflected onto the bar and over by O'Sullivan.
Casement soon got their opening gaol but Northvilla had to wait until the second last minute when Steve O’Connor fired home after a good move. It wasn't enough to prevent Casement from adding the Corinthians Cup to that promotion they’ve already won from AUL 2.
